DutchCalc

About and methodology

DutchCalc is built by Albert Nahas, a software engineer who moved to Amsterdam and got tired of calculators that disagree with each other and never say why.

Where the numbers come from

Every rate, threshold and fee comes from the official source: the Belastingdienst for tax and zorgtoeslag, the IND and the Rijkswet op het Nederlanderschap for citizenship, Rijksoverheid and Zorginstituut Nederland for health insurance. Each calculator lists its sources and the date we last checked them, at the bottom of the page.

How the calculators work

  • The salary calculator applies the box 1 brackets, the general tax credit and the labour tax credit for the year you pick, for someone below state pension age. It does not include pension contributions, benefits in kind or a partner's income, which your payslip may.
  • The citizenship calculator counts uninterrupted lawful residence the way the IND does, and flags anything that resets the count.
  • The health insurance calculator uses the national average premium and the official zorgtoeslag formula.

Results are estimates to help you plan. They are not tax, legal or insurance advice. For a decision that matters, confirm with the Belastingdienst, the IND, your gemeente or a licensed adviser.

When rules change

Dutch rules change every 1 January, and the next year's plans are published every September on Prinsjesdag. We update the moment the official figures are out, and show next year's figures as soon as they are proposed, clearly labelled.

How DutchCalc is paid for

Some links go to partners, such as licensed insurance comparison sites, money transfer services and language courses. If you sign up through one, we may get a fee. That never changes a number on this site. We do not compare or recommend individual insurers.
